HMC Welcomes the First Inpatients to Qatar Rehabilitation Institute

Ahead of the official opening of three new hospitals in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City later this year, Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) today welcomed its first inpatients from Rumailah Hospital.

This move comes after the start of some outpatient services late last year and precedes the official opening of the new dedicated rehabilitation facility.

All male and female stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury as well as general rehabilitation inpatients will move from the care of Rumailah Hospital’s rehabilitation services team to QRI, the largest rehabilitation hospital in the region.

Currently, the QRI houses outpatient clinics which were relocated from Rumailah Hospital in December 2016. These include physical medicine and rehabilitation, speech therapy, adult neuro occupational therapy and adult neuro physiotherapy clinics. Additional clinics and services will also be gradually phased in.

Care at Qatar Rehabilitation Institute is program based and rehabilitation programs are delivered to promote and enable patient centered care. This care is delivered in a holistic, evidence based way and coordinated across appropriate settings. It includes interdisciplinary involvement of healthcare providers by physicians, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists, involving family wherever possible.

When fully operational, Qatar Rehabilitation Institute’s patient centered, interdisciplinary approach will be delivered across the Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Musculoskeletal/Pain Management and Pediatric Rehabilitation Programs. These have been developed for acute care, sub-acute care, day care patients and outpatients as well as those in community based rehabilitation. This program based approach ensures that a patient’s needs and expectations are consistently met throughout their recovery journey.

Commenting on the commencement of inpatient services at the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute, the facility’s CEO, Prof. Gisli Einarsson said: “Late last year, we welcomed our first outpatients to QRI and it now gives me great pleasure to be able to welcome our first inpatients. My primary goal and that of the rest of the QRI team is to help these patients reach their maximum recovery potential so that they can return to living as normal a life as possible. We will do this by tailoring the care they will receive to their individual needs to ensure the best possible recovery outcome.”
